CoffeeFile FAQ — Home Espresso and Coffee Brewing Questions

Question 1

What is the best espresso machine for a home beginner?

Accepted Answer

For a home beginner, a single-boiler heat-exchanger or dual-boiler espresso machine with a reliable PID is the most forgiving choice. Look for stable 9-bar pressure, a 58 mm portafilter, and adequate steam power for milk drinks. Starter-friendly picks from CoffeeFile focus on machines that are easy to dial in, easy to descale, and have a wide parts ecosystem.

Question 2

What grinder should I buy for espresso at home?

Accepted Answer

A flat-burr or conical-burr grinder with stepless or fine-stepped adjustment and low retention is the right choice for home espresso. Single-dose grinders reduce waste and let you switch between beans quickly. CoffeeFile's grinder guides cover burr size, motor type, dose consistency, and retention so you can match a grinder to your machine.

Question 3

How do I dial in espresso grind size?

Accepted Answer

Start with the grinder's manufacturer-recommended setting for espresso, then pull a shot in 25–30 seconds at a 1:2 ratio. If the shot runs fast, grind finer; if it chokes, grind coarser. Adjust one click at a time and re-pull. CoffeeFile's dial-in guide covers ratio, time, taste, and troubleshooting sticky shots.

Question 4

What is the difference between a single-boiler, heat-exchanger, and dual-boiler espresso machine?

Accepted Answer

Single-boiler machines brew and steam with one boiler, so you must wait between modes. Heat-exchanger (HX) machines have a single boiler with a small brew heat-exchanger that lets you brew and steam nearly simultaneously. Dual-boiler machines have separate brew and steam boilers, giving the most stable temperatures and simultaneous brewing and steaming — the choice for serious home baristas.

Question 5

How fine should I grind for pour-over coffee?

Accepted Answer

For pour-over, grind to a medium-fine consistency similar to table salt — coarser than espresso but finer than French press. A 1:16 coffee-to-water ratio with a 3–4 minute pour is a good starting point. CoffeeFile's pour-over guides cover grind size, water temperature, pouring technique, and recipe variations for different roasts.

Question 6

How do I clean and maintain an espresso machine?

Accepted Answer

Backflush the group head with water and espresso machine cleaner weekly, soak the portafilter and basket daily, descale the boiler every 1–3 months depending on water hardness, and replace group head gaskets and shower screens annually. CoffeeFile's maintenance guides walk through each step with photos and a checklist.

Question 7

What is a bottomless portafilter and why use one?

Accepted Answer

A bottomless portafilter has no spouts, so you can see the espresso flow directly. It exposes channeling, uneven tamping, and grind distribution problems instantly — making it the fastest way to dial in a new grinder or coffee. CoffeeFile's bottomless portafilter guide explains puck prep, distribution tools, WDT, and how to read your shots.

Question 8

What water should I use for espresso and coffee?

Accepted Answer

Use filtered water with 50–175 ppm total hardness, balanced mineral content, and no chlorine. Hard water causes scale in boilers; soft water under-extracts and tastes flat. CoffeeFile's water guide covers remineralization, RO systems, and the magnesium and calcium levels that produce the best-tasting espresso.
